As we celebrate the month of July, we should praise God for allowing us to be in a nation that was founded under God. “Blessed is the nation, whose God is the Lord” (Psalm. 33:12).
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America….” U.S. Constitution
In America’s revolutionary history, the Declaration of Independence is one of the most iconic documents that was issued by Congress on July 4, 1776, to sever bonds with Britain in hopes to develop a free nation under God.
But what does the Declaration of Independence actually declare? For most Americans today, the answer states in the opening sentence of the second paragraph: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
During the March on Washington in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recited these words and said that it was time for the nation to make good on this“ promissory note” and to rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. One hundred years earlier, in President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, he insisted that the nation had been founded upon the proposition that all men are created equal. But sadly, our nation is dismissing the important factor that we are all created equal, plus denying the need to trust in God, but our founding fathers knew the importance and significance of the power of prayer, especially through times of war and tragedy, we have been called to pray. Today is no different, and as believers in Christ, we must continue to pray and acknowledge God’s infinite love and mercy towards his people more seriously as the scripture states, ” If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14.
